Jobs & Recruitment in Cambodia

Work work work, you thought you’d left that all behind right? Well if you are reading this then you have realized you are wrong, very wrong. If you are planning to stay in Cambodia for a while and you don’t have a Scrooge Mc’Duck style limitless pot of gold you will need to start searching through available jobs in Cambodia.

But where to start? Well luckily for you the Your Cambodia team has had quite a lot of experience in various jobs in Cambodia over the years and here is our snap shot of where to start and what to expect.

Party on.

If you’ve been having a great time back packing around and are looking for ways to keep the party train rolling then the most obvious thing is to look for work in a bar or hostel. There are tons and tons of these jobs in Cambodia up for grabs every year and many come with free accommodation plus food & drink. The best places are probably to head to the islands or Siem Reap but there are some options available here in Phnom Penh as well.

Believe it or not some of the YC team actually started out this way our selves so when we say this is a good stepping stone to kick start a life here in Cambodia we really mean it.

Teaching English.

Moving slightly up the ladder as it were for those of you who are happy to leave the 24 hour party scene behind is English teaching. There are so many Schools out there offering English programs it’s scary but how to get into it is the question?

Well firstly if you have any kind of University Degree, hold an English teaching qualification and/or are a native English speaker then you may have a shot at getting into one of the various international schools here.

However if you do not possess any of the above don’t worry as there are some options available to you. The first would be to get some kind of TEFL qualification which will give you the basics when it comes to teaching English, there is a program currently operating here in Phnom Penh which we can recommend here. Although you may not be able to score a gig in one of the international schools a TEFL should help you get a liveable salary in a fairly decent school.

Teaching English can be one of the most rewarding jobs in Cambodia especially if you enjoy helping others learn, you will find Khmer students to be attentive and very much fascinated in their foreign teacher so enjoy the experience as you may make friends for life.

Recruitment Consultants.

Don’t fancy either of the above? Well it may well be worth you contacting one of the employment agencies here in Phnom Penh to see if there are any employment opportunities for your skillset. Although generally opportunities for foreigners are few and far between it is always worth a shot. Certainly if you have the gift of the gab when it comes to sales you may well find there are companies looking for staff.

The Your Cambodia team’s recruitment consultants of choice would be Top Recruitment. The team is professional and have certainly helped us on many occasions over the years.

Start your own business.

If you’re enthusiastic enough and think you have some great ideas then join the club. Starting your own business is certainly a challenging and rewarding experience here in Cambodia but there are a few things to consider before you go running off to change the world.

Firstly do you have enough capital behind you? How well do you know Cambodia and its culture? Are you aware of the rules in regards to Cambodian labour law? Are you aware of which ministries you need to register your company with? How to apply for a VAT patent?

There are so many things to take into consideration before you jump into your start up. Yes Cambodia can be a fairly relaxed country but trust us when we tell you that making sure you are properly registered for tax & VAT is an absolute must. You would never dream of cutting corners back home so we advise you to not cut corners here or you will be caught.

We will be going deeper into this subject in later posts and we hope that you stay tuned to our social media channels to keep up to date with what we are up to in Cambodia. As always you can contact us directly if you have any questions, comments or if you want to live it, love it and share any of your experiences with the YC team.
