If you will be spending any time in Kampot or the surrounding area than one thing that can not be missed as far as we are concerned is a day trip to Bokor Mountain and its surrounding National Park.
You can always arrange to go by tuk tuk or mini bus or even on an organised tour from many guest houses or hotels but the best way to see it (for the more adventurous) is to hire your own motorbike and drive up there yourself. The drive alone up the more than 1km high winding roads is breath-taking to say the least.
You will need to make sure you fill up your gas tank at the gas station at the entrance as fuel is drained fast getting up the mountain. If you do make it to the top, there are some small shacks selling fuel near the old casino.
The road is in great condition and there is so much to see. The old church and remains of a former French colonial settlement are fascinating to explore. The waterfall is beautiful no matter what time of year you visit. The new development of huge casino is not for everybody but it gets a mention regardless.
Unfortunately the old casino is now under redevelopment at the time of writing but for those of us who did visit it before the re development can tell you it held a ghostly and fascinating presence.
If you are after a relatively cheap day out with a thrilling ride, spectacular views, waterfalls and adventure amongst ruined structures then this is certainly the place for you.
